Carpet cleaning with professional hot water extraction

Not every mess needs a professional. A lot of everyday cleaning around your London home, a carpet stain, a marked sofa cushion, a light dusting after a small repair job, you can absolutely tackle yourself with things already sitting in your kitchen cupboard.

But some jobs look simple and aren’t. Below, we’ve put together honest DIY cleaning tips for three of the messiest situations homeowners deal with, and where the DIY approach hits its limit, so you know exactly when it’s worth booking a professional instead of spending your whole Saturday on it.

Not every mess needs a professional. A lot of everyday cleaning around your London home , a carpet stain, a marked sofa cushion, a light dusting after a small repair job, you can absolutely tackle yourself with things already sitting in your kitchen cupboard.

    1. DIY Carpet Stain & Odour Removal

Most fresh, everyday carpet stains can be handled at home if you act quickly:

    • Blot, don’t rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres. Press a clean, dry cloth straight down onto the spill to lift as much as possible first.
    • Baking soda for odours. Sprinkle it generously over the area, leave for a few hours (overnight for stubborn smells), then vacuum thoroughly.
    • White vinegar + water for stains. A 1:1 solution of white vinegar and water, dabbed on and blotted, works well on food and drink stains.
    • Cold water for blood or protein-based stains. Hot water sets these stains permanently, always use cold.
    • A rented steam cleaner can refresh a room that just looks tired, not stained.

Where DIY falls short: home methods clean the surface of the carpet fibre. They don’t reach the padding underneath, where spills, pet accidents and years of foot traffic actually accumulate, which is usually what’s causing a lingering smell that “won’t go away” no matter how much you vacuum. Over wetting a carpet with a rented steam cleaner can also leave it damp for days, leading to mould in the padding. And if the damage is a burn, snag, or a seam pulling apart, no amount of cleaning fixes that, it needs actual repair.

This is where Dexbury comes in. Our carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning uses professional hot water extraction, it reaches deep into the padding, lifts embedded dirt and allergens, and dries fully within hours, not days. And if the issue is physical damage rather than dirt, our carpet repair team handles burns, snags, seams, and pet or moth damage on-site, often colour matched and finished in a single visit.

    2. DIY Sofa & Upholstery Spot Cleaning

Sofas, armchairs and dining chairs pick up spills, body oils and everyday dirt just like carpets do. For fresh marks, here is what you can do at home:

    • Check the care label first. Most sofas have a cleaning code under the seat cushions. “W” means water-based cleaners are fine, “S” means solvent only, and “X” means vacuum only. Using the wrong method can leave water rings or damage the fabric.
    • Vacuum before you clean. Use the upholstery attachment along seams and under cushions to lift crumbs and grit, so you are not rubbing dirt into the fabric.
    • Blot, don’t rub. Dab fresh spills with a clean white cloth, working from the outside of the mark inwards so it doesn’t spread.
    • Use as little liquid as possible. A few drops of mild washing-up liquid in warm water on a cloth is enough for most water-safe fabrics. Soaking the cushion can leave a watermark or let moisture sit in the foam.
    • Let it dry fully with good ventilation before sitting on it again.

Where DIY falls short: spot cleaning only treats the surface. It can’t flush out the dirt and oils that build up deep in the fabric and padding over time, and patchy spot cleaning can leave a sofa looking uneven, with clean patches next to dull areas.

This is where Dexbury comes in. Our carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning uses Prochem hot water extraction to clean the whole piece evenly, deep into the fibres. Our cleaners are trained by Prochem Europe, and the products we use are pet safe and child safe.

    3. DIY Post-Construction Cleanup

After a renovation, small repair, or DIY project, here’s how to handle the initial cleanup yourself:

    • Vacuum before you wipe. Wipe first and you’ll just smear dust into a paste. Vacuum (ideally with a HEPA filter) to lift loose dust first.
    • Damp-wipe surfaces, don’t dry-dust. A slightly damp microfibre cloth traps fine dust instead of scattering it back into the air.
    • Work top to bottom. Ceilings and shelves first, floors last, otherwise you’re just re-dirtying what you already cleaned.
    • Change vacuum filters and cloths often. Construction dust clogs filters fast, and a dirty cloth just redistributes dust rather than removing it.
    • Ventilate the room while you clean to help settle airborne dust rather than breathing it in.

Where DIY falls short: construction dust is genuinely different from household dust, it settles into vents, light fittings, and skirting boards for days after the work is “done,” which is why a room can look clean and then get dusty again 48 hours later. Fine particles like plaster and drywall dust are also an inhalation risk without a proper mask and filtration, and standard household vacuums aren’t built to handle the volume or grit of true post-construction debris.

This is where Dexbury comes in. Our post-construction cleaning service clears dust and debris from newly built, renovated or refurbished properties right down to handover standard, floors, windows, kitchens, bathrooms, the lot, for both residential and commercial jobs.
