A room-by-room end of tenancy cleaning checklist for London tenants, covering the kitchen, bathroom, carpets and everything letting agents check.
Moving out of a rented flat or house in London? The end-of-tenancy clean is one of the biggest factors in getting your deposit back. Your landlord or letting agent will compare the property against the check-in inventory, and anything that is dirtier than when you moved in can be deducted from your deposit. This checklist covers what needs cleaning, room by room, so nothing gets missed.
Before you start
- Find your check-in inventory and photos, so you know the standard the property needs to be returned to.
- Remove all your belongings, rubbish and food first. It is much quicker to clean empty rooms.
- Make sure the electricity and hot water are on.
- Leave enough time. A proper end-of-tenancy clean takes far longer than a regular weekly clean.
Kitchen checklist
- Oven, hob and extractor hood cleaned inside and out, including racks and trays
- Fridge and freezer emptied, defrosted, cleaned and dried
- Cupboards and drawers cleaned inside and out
- Worktops, splashbacks and wall tiles degreased
- Sink and taps descaled and polished
- Microwave, dishwasher and washing machine cleaned
- Floor vacuumed and mopped, including edges and under appliances you can move
The oven is easy to underestimate. Built-up grease can take hours to shift without professional products.
Bathroom checklist
- Toilet, bath, shower and basin cleaned and descaled
- Shower screen, glass and taps free of limescale
- Tiles and grout cleaned
- Mirrors and cabinets wiped inside and out
- Extractor fan cover wiped
- Floor mopped
Limescale builds up quickly on taps, showerheads and glass in hard-water areas like London, so give these extra attention.
Bedrooms and living areas
- Inside wardrobes, drawers and cupboards
- Skirting boards, doors, door frames and light switches
- Light fittings and radiators dusted
- Windowsills wiped
- Hard floors mopped and carpets vacuumed
Carpets and sofas
Many tenancy agreements ask for carpets to be professionally cleaned at the end of the tenancy, so check yours. Vacuuming alone will not lift ground-in dirt, traffic lanes or odours. Hot water extraction flushes them out of the fibres. If the property is furnished, sofas and upholstered chairs will be checked too.
At Dexbury, carpet and sofa cleaning is included as standard in our end-of-tenancy cleans, not charged as an extra. Our cleaners are trained by Prochem Europe and use Prochem hot water extraction.
Hallways and stairs
- Banisters and handrails wiped
- Skirting boards and doors cleaned
- Stairs and floors vacuumed and mopped
DIY or professional?
A small, lightly used flat can be cleaned yourself if you have the time and the right products. For larger properties, heavy grease or limescale, or carpets that need deep cleaning, a professional end-of-tenancy clean usually saves time and gives you a better chance of a full deposit return.
